My name is Dr Chris Richards and I have been working in the NHS as a doctor for over 20 years. I have been a GP partner for the last 15 years, and previously worked in hospital in acute care, paediatrics, mental health, cardiology, respiratory, gastroenterology, orthopaedics and gynaecology.
In the NHS I have an interest in dermatology and men’s health, but my real passions are aesthetics and lifestyle medicine.
When I was at school I loved sports. I wasn’t the best but I’d have a go at anything. At university I played for the football team, and obtained a black belt in the Korean martial art of Choi Kwang Do. Unfortunately, the long hours of a junior doctor put pay to any exercise. And 20 years later when I reached 40yrs old I realised I had (like many) prioritised work and family life over health, reduced my exercise, enjoyed too much processed food and alcohol, and subsequently expanded the waistline. At the same time the concept of lifestyle management started to gather momentum and I decided to make changes. I increased my exercise, made changes to diet, reducing offenders like refined sugars and salt, and made efforts to address stress (I work for the NHS so that’s a work in progress!) In the last few years I’ve started the martial art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Not only has my cardio and breathing improved, my muscle mass has increased, and my blood pressure has dropped. Being part of the sporting community has also improved my mental health and reduced my stress levels. I like everyone could gain more benefits (I’m not ready to give up pastry just yet) but I’m giving myself a better chance of living healthier for longer. And if I can make positive changes then we can all do it no matter how old you are, or what long term health conditions you have.
Feedback from my NHS patients is that NHS appointments are too short to deal with complex issues or multiple concerns. It is important with any health concern that you have the time to discuss this thoroughly with a physician. This is why my private appointments are a minimum of 30 minutes, but can be longer if required. For whatever reason you decide to come and see me, my focus is on identifying your concerns, and tailoring investigations or treatments to your individual need.
